Florida Yearbook Seminar Notes and Presentations

I was privileged to work with a group of middle and high school students in St. Petersburg, Florida a couple of weekends ago. My emphasis was on learning to use the camera in manual mode using the exposure triangle and using the elements of composition to become a better photographer.

The students in the photography track have their work critiqued by their peers and the instructor  and receive feedback to assist them in becoming better photographers. Images are critiqued for proper exposure, sharpness and the compositional elements used to help tell the story.

It is indeed an interesting process watching the students go from using full auto mode on their cameras to understanding ISO, aperture and shutter speed and how manual settings can affect the final image.

Below are some links that might be helpful in helping to further understand all the factors that go into making powerful photographs that tell a story.

5 Steps to Make your Photos Pop

See the links below for tutorials and how to’s.

1) Cropping – remember pixel density (300) and aspect ratio (vertical or landscape) of final layout

2) Understand the Histogram – tells you how darks and lights are distributed through the photo

3) Sharpening –

4) Levels – use the levels tool to make accurate color adjustments

5) Saturation – a little goes a long way!

Championship Dreams

District Champions.

Regional Champions.

Final Four Qualifier.

A team that went further than any other in the previous five decades.

A team that held the number one ranked team in the state of Florida to under fifty points.

Only to lose by five after closing the score to within two with two minutes to go in the game.

Seasons should not have to end in heartbreak.

But, unless you win it all. That’s what happens.

46-41. Heartbreak.

Congratulations, Jesuit.

State Champions – The Providence Stallions

The Providence Stallions played Coral Springs Christian in the FHSAA Class 3A title game today in Lakeland, Florida.

The Stallions fell behind early to a feisty Coral Springs team, but eventually prevailed 62-56 to take home their second state title in boys hoops.

Led by Grayson Allen’s 31 points, the Jimmy Martin coached squad enjoyed celebrating their success on the court this year and with four returning starters, things look good for another run next year to state.

The Budweiser Clydesdales

The Budweiser Clydesdales came to Jacksonville, Florida on February 16 and 17, 2013.

The team was at the Budweiser Brewery on Busch Drive to promote the Anheuser Busch brand.

Hundreds of folks came out to see the famous hitch, sample Budweiser beer and go through the free brewery tour.

Good times. Love those horses.

My favorite Clydesdale commercial of all time. Watch as the story is told with strong visuals and great editing that continually engages the viewer’s eye with all edits done on motion.

Ride the Train – The Orange Blossom Cannonball

The family and I took a drive to Tavares, Florida recently to ride a real, wood fired, steam locomotive known as the Orange Blossom Cannonball.

The folks that run the Cannonball are in the process of rebuilding the rail bed and constructing a new station modeled after rail depots of old.

Overall, the experience was a fun, family day. Here are a few snaps and a video of the train in action.

More Christmas Basketball

Todays update from Daytona Beach, Florida –

The Crusaders played Leesburg High School in the second round of action from the Father Lopez Holiday Tournament.

The Leesburg team played a tough, physical game with strong beyond the arc shooting which seemed to take the BK squad out of their rhythm in the first half.

The Crusaders did rally in the second half to overcome what had been an 18 point Leesburg lead to make the final score 60-52. The Crusaders’ record now stands at 10-2.

The Crusaders return to action today at 4:30 against Mainland High School in the tourney consolation game.

Sarah and Dustin

Being a part of one of the most special days of a couple’s life together is indeed a special thing.

Being asked to preserve the memories of that day is even more special. My goal is to make sure that the couple has a great photo album of the day.

Thank you Sarah and Dustin for trusting me with your photo memories.

I wish you guys all the best life has to offer together. Marriage is a great ride. Enjoy it!

Here is a first look at some of the memories from your day. Enjoy!

Florida and Florida State – The Sunshine Showdown

Once again the Seminoles and the Gators rivalry game took place on the last week of the regular season.

In a highly anticipated game billed as The Sunshine Showdown, both fan bases showed up to support their team and urge them on to victory. Florida went out to an early lead that lasted into the third quarter when the Seminoles scored 17 unanswered points to lead the Gators 20-13. It looked like the margin of 7 points the Seminoles were favored by was going to prove the difference.

However, in the final stanza, Florida put up 24 points to retake the lead and defeat the home team 37-26 after a late, inconsequential E.J. Manuel touchdown.

For this year, the Florida faithful have the bragging rights after a hard fought victory by the boys in orange and blue.

As one disappointed Seminole fan said after the game, “Wait’ll next year.’

Next year can’t get here soon enough to see this great rivalry renewed one more time.
